Breeding objectives for a Nellore cattle rearing system PAB
Carvalho,Caio Victor Damasceno; Bittencourt,Thereza Cristina Calmon de.
Abstract:The objective of this work was to define the traits that should be included as breeding objectives for Nellore cattle, according to simulations with a bio-economic model for rearing systems. The economic values (EVs) of the traits were calculated as the differences between the profits due to an increased performance of 1% in each trait, with the others traits remaining constant. To determine the impact of each selection on the revenue system, two scenarios were simulated based on the traits being selected. In the first scenario, the adopted selection criteria were: weaning weight (WW), weaning rate (WR), yearling weight (YW), and mature cow weight (MCW). In the second scenario, the cumulative productivity (CP) of dams was used as an indirect...

Can early handling of suckler beef calves reduce their timidity towards humans? Organic Eprints
Probst, Johanna K.; Hillmann, Edna; Leiber, Florian; Kreuzer, Michael; Spengler Neff, Anet.
In herds of suckler beef cows the relationship between humans and animals is an important issue concerning animal handling. Unlike dairy cow herds, suckler beef herds are less used to close contact with humans. Due to low management input animals may be difficult to handle during treatments like medical care, routine handling or at slaughter house.

Challenges and future perspectives of different organic beef cattle farms of Southern Europe Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J.; Gaspar, P.; Mesias, F.J.; Escribano, M.; Pulido, A.F..
The livestock sector must be redesigned in order to achieve food security sustainably. Several authors have argued that organic farming may contribute positively in this sense. However, the externalities of the organic livestock systems are influenced by several factors. Due to this, the aim of this paper is to shed light on the needs and perspective of the organic beef cattle farms located in the 'dehesa' ecosystem (SW Spain). For this purpose, we created the 'Feasibility of Success Index' (FSI) by using indicators that took into account the context of the extensive livestock systems located in the Mediterranean basin. Two groups of organic farms were analyzed: farms that sold calves at weaning age a conventional ones (Organic); farms that fattened and...

Changes in soil microbial communities as affected by intensive cattle husbandry Organic Eprints
Elhottová, D.; Koubová, A.; Simek, M.; Cajthaml, T.; Jirout, J.; Esperschuetz, J.; Schloter, M.; Gattimger, A..
The present field study documents substantial changes in the soil microbial community (SMC) and organic matter (SOM) in an upland pasture soil resulting from 10 years of “cattle outdoor over-wintering practice”. Soils from a long-term investigated pasture area were compared under three different levels of cattle impact (SI – severe, MI – moderate, NI – no impact). Extended polar lipids analysis (PLA) confirmed a qualitatively new microbial community profile and a several-fold increase of the microbial biomass in the impacted soils (SI) compared to the control NI soil. The new SMC was derived from cattle intestine microorganisms, typical by increased content of archaeal phospholipid ether lipids and by new fatty acids indicative for bacterial and fungal...

Characterization of cattle slaughtered at the public abattoir in Lavras-MG Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Guimarães,Adriano de Souza; Souza,José Camisão de; Andrade,Ivo Francisco de; Freitas,Rilke Tadeu Fonseca de; Cirillo,Marcelo Ângelo.
The objective was to characterize cattle slaughtered from the region of Lavras - MG. In the public abattoir 720 bovines were identified and slaughtered from September 20th through November 20th of 2004. Variables such as: genetic origin, live weight, body condition, age, and sex were studied. At arrival, animals were weighed and classified according to their genetic origin. Before slaughter, their body condition (BC) was determined on a 1 - 9 scale. Reproductive status was observed during scratch and evisceration: castrated male, MC; intact male, MI; pregnant female, FG; and Non-pregnant female, FNG. Age was determined by the count of the permanent incisive teeth (p.i.t.). Most animals slaughtered during the survey were male, with predominance of the...

Colostral transmission of BTV-8 antibodies from dairy cows six years after vaccination Organic Eprints
Ayrle, Hannah; Mevissen, Meike; Kaske, Martin; Vögtlin, Andrea; Fricker, Raffael; Hofmann, Bernd; Büttner, Mathias; Marinovic, Zlatko; Walkenhorst, Michael.
Bluetongue virus (BTV) antibodies were analysed in 27 Swiss calves born in 2016 at the age of 16–19 days using competitive enzyme-linked-immunosorbent-assay (cELISA) and virus neutralization test (VNT) (animal trial permission number: 75684). Obligatory documentation proved that 15 of 27 dams were BTV-8 vaccinated once or three times in 2008–2010. The offsprings of the non-vaccinated dams were seronegative. Two of three calves and 11 of 12 calves descending from dams who had been vaccinated one or three times, respectively, had BTV specific serum antibodies. As Switzerland is considered BTV-free from 2010 to 2016, it is likely that BTV-8 antibodies were transferred via colostrum. Furthermore, we confirmed neutralizing cross-reactivity of BTV-8 with BTV-4...

Commerce et santé des veaux «excédentaires» en zone de montagne: une étude des Grisons Organic Eprints
Janett, Rut; Oehen, Bernadette.
Cela...

Comparative Sustainability Assessment of Extensive Beef Cattle Farms Organic Eprints
Escribano, AJ; Gaspar , P; Mesias, FJ; Escribano, M; Pulido, F.
This chapter analyzes the sustainability of beef cattle systems of the Spanish Rangelands known as “Dehesas”. These are traditional systems of the Iberian Peninsula where native herbaceous vegetation and evergreen species of Quercus provide the basis for extensive livestock farms. These systems are considered as outstanding High Nature Value (HNV) farming systems and the most extensive agroforestry systems in Europe according to CORINE Land Cover. Beef farms in this area show low stocking rates and a small dependence on foodstuff purchases. However, certain changes have occurred in the last decadesdue to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). On the one hand, some farms have become more intensified, as a way to maximize the revenues from the CAP subsidies....
